Pushing On The Platform

I have got to work through a funk. I can not communicate with the place I live in.(ironic) I have learned how to communicate with the web. It shows me elegant design, Veerle Pieters from Belgium and closer to home the lovely and talented Jason Santa Maria. These are contemporaries who consistently embody the current state of web design. The influence of their standards and creativity to connect people to ideas has influenced this design and also what design is to me. There are also many more examples that I read daily. But the challenge to design is here, not with distant example.

The Distance Between

To any cultural proxemic, design takes on locale. Spatial Comprehension is not a linear idea and is directly influenced by the curtural proxemic and the beliefs it holds. What is satisfying to one may be a challange for others to comprehend. Color, readiing, and layout are examples. Not only must the tool solve problems it must also work within the boundries of the spatial comprehension of a given proxemic.

Taking away the phenomena of the web and focusing on proxemics allows us to view the web as it is applied by locale. When the aforementioned designers or others were mentioned as suggested viewing for clients most times this influence is ignored and most importantly there was no change in their perspective of what the web is. The distance form the information was maintained. Interpretation replaced organic design.

A new rule

The closer the proxemic is to information the more design has an influence. The more distance information is from a given proxcemic the more interpretation there is, diminishing the influence of design.

So Who Influences Who?

So therein lies the funk between client and designer. In many situations design is ignored and interpretation is acceptable and labeled as "perspective" rendering modern design moot. How distant was your last client?
